Building Careers

Trades Taster

You get to try real trades — welding, wiring, wood, whatever's on offer — for a day at a time. No test. You find out what fits, what doesn't, and what your next step could be. Trying it and saying 'not for me' is a win too.

At a glance

Pillar

Sessions
Two to four taster days per cohort
Session length
Half a day is typical
Who leads it
A partner delivers the content; New Steps hosts it

New Steps Certificate — competence-based, signed off when the young person has shown the skill on a real task

The number of days depends on partner availability for each cohort.

What they leave with

  • Their own record of the trades they tried — what they liked, what was not for them
  • A named next step
  • A support map of who helps them

How it runs

A partner host site delivers the trade. New Steps transports, hosts and wraps. This is exploration — not a course, and not job training.

How it connects

Modules are built to stack. Where one has already taught a skill, the next one recalls it rather than teaching it again.

Is this a fit for someone you work with?

A caseworker reaches out, we book a tour, and we work out together whether New Steps is the right place. When a room is open, a referral can come together in about a week. When we are full, we will say so. New Steps is not an emergency placement service — we do not take same-day or overnight placements.
